Sitting here drinking my Starbuck’s Caramel Macchiato and thinking… I’m thinking about this year past and about the year to come, what I’ve been through and where I am going. My decision is to stop thinking about where I come from and where I’ve been. It serves no purpose. Actually, the only reason I or anyone should ever think about their past (as far as their mistakes goes anyways) is to learn from it. Instead of looking at it and asking yourself what you did wrong though, ask yourself what you did right to get as far as you did and what you could do better next time. Anything but those two questions is ludicrous (and I’m not talking about the rapper).
A lot of times we have a problem with and an affinity for beating ourselves up. They say we are our worst enemy, and for most of us this rings so true. I once read that about 75% of the conversations we have are with ourselves and 85% of those are negative. That’s the facts and that’s sad if you ask me, which I know you didn’t.
That is what makes me want to start being my best friend instead of my worst enemy. I (not want but) AM going to start to live each day with vigor and from a place of appreciation for the things and people who I DO have in my life. I will start to look at the things, situations, and people in my life that aren’t serving a positive purpose or aren’t congruent with the type of life I say I choose to live, and either, as Brian Tracy says, limit my association with them or be willing to walk away completely. That is what is called looking out for number one and doing what is best for Self.
So, starting this new year with the right footing is paramount. I am at a crossroads in my life where the next few major decisions could catapult me to greatness or pull me down to mediocrity. The choice is all mine. It is no one elses to make. No one is going to take the fall for me or hold themselves accountable for my failures so therefore I must decide to do it on my own. The time is now.
My Step-Father once told me that if you go to a travel agent they cannot help you to reach your destination unless you knew two vital pieces of information: 1.) where you are at, and 2.) where you want to go. That stuck with me. That is where goals come into play. The constant setting, implementing, editing, and rearranging of goals is crucial. “He who fails to plan, plans to fail,” they say.
So, this new year can either be the best year of our lives, or the worst. Guess who gets to decide upon which they want it to be? You got it. You. Only you. You are today the exact sum of all of your thoughts and decisions up to this point. On a deeper level it really only comes down to your thoughts. A great book once said it, “As a man thinketh, so is he. As he continue to thinketh, so he remains.” Your thoughts are the limo driver and you are the CEO in the back telling him where to go. I hope you choose to give him destinations that fulfill your passion and purpose on this planet.
I am ready for this new year. I am ready for this new life. I am capable. I am magnificent. I am an awesome creator. I AM. I hope you are too.
